[DE; 2019] Solo Series | Heidelberg

Heidelberg! One of my favorite places in Germany ♥

How to get there!

There are 2 options to get from Frankfurt to Heidelberg - either bus or train!

I opted for the bus (it's cheaper), book your bus tickets from FlixBus!
FlixBus, https://global.flixbus.com/;
Bus Station Location: Frankfurt am Main at Stuttgarter Strasse 26 (Google Map)
I thought I could get the tickets at the bus station, but I was wrong! I woke up in the morning checking the website and realized all the slots I wanted were sold out! Panicking, I downloaded the app and bought the next available bus tickets. #lastminute

The app was really very friendly, here's some preview! The app in green!
Download the app: Google Play Store / Apple Store

Search for your tickets > select your preferred timings > pay > e-ticket available instantly!
The bus conductor will scan the QR code on the app upon boarding, search for your seats using the seat number provided, and track your journey! It's really so convenient for travelers / tourists.

Kudos for the paperless transaction!

How to explore?

If you're aimless and without itinerary, Heidelberg Card will be the best choice. It cames with unlimited bus rides and Castle tickets (with tram ride). If you have in mind what you want to do - it is cheaper to get the tickets separately.

For instance, you're only planning to visit the castle and walk about the old town. Just purchase the Castle tickets (with tram ride) and 2 bus tickets. You can save quite a bit of euros!

Heidelberg Card, 17 Euros
Available at Tourist Information at the Heidelberg Main Station

Where to Explore?

To be honest, I went Heidelberg without any itinerary. Thankfully I met 2 Korean ladies which allowed me to join them. They were super well prepared, so all I do was to follow them.

1. Heidelberg Castle with Tram ride

To get to the castle effortlessly, a tram ride is the best option!
Bergbahn Heidelberg,
Zwingerstraße 20, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany (Google Map)
Take Bus 33 from Heidelberg Main Station

It was just a few minutes ride to the Castle, if you have the time, you can take the tram all the way to the top!

Pretty castle ruins & view of the town from the top~

2. Heidelberger Marktplatz

Exit the castle and stroll down the slope - you will reach this pretty historical marketplace!
Address: Marktpl. 5, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany (Google Map)

Gummy bears!

The Korean ladies wanted some ice-cream (gelato), so this was my lunch. It was super yummy in the hot weather!

3. Old Bridge Heidelberg

Iconic pedestrian bridge constructed in 1788! Best place to take a nice scenic view of Heidelberg.
The Korean ladies did some research and told me - to touch the horns to return back to Heidelberg, touch the mirror to be wealthy, and touch the mice next to the monkey to have many children.

Aside from that, I really loved the view - they looked like postcards!

4. Aussichtspunkt Schlangenweg / Philosophers' Way

We were searching for the directions to the Philosophers' Way, and the local showed us a shortcut right behind the bus stop (opposite the old bridge)!
Shortcut Location: Neuenheimer Landstraße 4, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany (Google Map)
I thought it was just a winding path - who knows it was a winding hiking path! OMG. Things like these happens when you're least prepared for it! The hike was 20 minutes or so, we took a break in the middle. It was tough as the path were made up of stones (abit slippery with much friction), and some slopes were steep!

We thought of giving up at the middle rest point, thankful for all the other travelers that stop-by encouraging us to finish up the hike! A well deserved view.

It looks almost similar with the drawing plan in 1620! Amazing work to preserve the town!

5. Heidelberg University

Germany oldest, 14th-century university!

You can take up a Museum tour - University Museum & Student Prison Museum!
Museum Tour, https://www.uni-heidelberg.de/en/institutions/museums-and-collections/university-museum
3 Euros, 2.5 Euros (with Heidelberg Card)

We managed to walk into the campus & explored the university buildings! (with the fear of being chased out) The university was so quiet that we didn't dare to make any sounds.

Don't you think that Heidelberg is an amazing place?
