[TW; 2024] Day 4 | Kinmen - Guningtou Jinning || Wheelchair series 🧑‍🦽‍➡️

Day 4

Breakfast

We were tired of having congee - so a change of breakfast menu!

Rice dumplings:

And some random fried stuffs:

We got them from some random food stall along the roadside near our minsu, so couldn't pin a location to it... The rice dumplings were yummy, but the others were quite average.

1. Guningtou 古寧頭 - Beishan 北山

My paternal grandfather came from Guningtou, hence this was our attempt to find some trace of "Lee 李" family over there.

We came across this very historical building in Beishan:
Beishan Old Western Style House 北山古洋樓背包客棧
It was really shocking moment to see the walls filled with bullet shots:

I always hear about Guningtou was the front line during the battle - but didn't across my mind that it was really that close to residential areas.

The whole area was quite peaceful, just a couple of tourists, but it was a good place to roam around and explore. The grounds were very flat, suitable for wheelchair users.

On the Beishan 北山, we found a 李 ancestral shrine, but wasn't sure was it the right one. Just a random found while driving around:

2. Guningtou 古寧頭 - Nanshan 南山

So we gathered from our minsu owner - whose mum was also a descendant of 李 from Guningtou that both Beishan & Nanshan have a lot of 李s. Which makes my dad was confident that my grandfather was from the Nanshan 南山 instead.
Li Shi Jia Miao 李氏家廟
Till today we are not 100% sure is this the right ancestral shrine, but we just declared that this is the right one. It was quite a pity we couldn't get in the shrine - otherwise it would be amazing to see the ancestral book with my grandfather's handwritten note mentioning my dad's name.

4. Cihu Luo Ri Guan Hai Platform 慈湖落日觀海平台

Exiting Guningtou, was this very pretty road along the coastline, and we decided to stop by this location for photos:

It is supposed to be a place for sunset, but day time was nice too!

There were a few signboards with information about the history - if you're someone who loves history, this place will be for you.

4. Huxia Seawall 湖下海堤

On the way back to the city, we stopped by this rundown but amazing place:
Huxia Seawall 湖下海堤
Ig worthy photo like this - the bridge at the background was super beautiful!

5. Shuitou Pier 水頭碼頭

Returned our rented car in the city, and the staff drove us back to Shuitou Pier! We decided to pop-by early to have lunch at this foodcourt / gift store next to the pier:
喬安牧場 (水頭南港分店) Joan Ranch
We managed to buy all the Kinmen snacks over here while the food was being prepared!

I find the food really yummy - although google reviews were a little mixed. The price is quite reasonable for a slight prime / touristy location. And having a 7-11 just next door was really convenient to grab things too. Plus, the pier is just 1 minute away, we didn't feel rushed to finish our meals.

I booked the ferry tickets in advance on klook: https://www.klook.com/en-SG/activity/11653-kinmen-xiamen-quanzhou-harbor-ferry-one-way-ticket-kinmen/, which was a good thing that we did. It was a pre-typhoon day and all the tickets were sold out. In addition... no ferries the next day!!! Lucky us!

Note: There will be people approaching you at the ferry terminal if you would like to purchase milk powder and sell them over to Xiamen for a profit - please do your own judgment, I would say no even though the profits were very high. You will never know if they are real milk powders.

Feeling really sad to say goodbye to Kinmen, it was really a nice, peaceful and slow trip.

And yes, the ferry terminal / pier is wheelchair friendly :) But the ferry wasn't - we had to carry the wheelchair down to the sitting area. Nevertheless, it was still a doable trip for wheelchair users.

Next post - back to China, Xiamen!
