[CN; 2025] Day 7 - Tokyo > Guangzhou | China Southern Airlines review \ Layover itinerary in City

This is a review of China Southern Airlines' economy, with an itinerary what you can do with a long layover in Taiwan! (This is not a sponsored post)

China Southern Airlines Review

There was no direct flight from Tokyo to Bali - and the best route was to return back to Singapore and take a flight to Bali. Being adventurous and determined to unlock new places, we decided to go for the unconventional way - layover in China!

I was worried back then as technically it was my first time on a China based airlines and I heard plenty stories about their services & flights. So my expectations were really low. The one way ticket only costed USD200 which was superb low priced for a 10 hours combined flight time.

My extremely honest review as a frequent flyer on various airlines:
The check-in counter ground staff at Haneda were very patience and nice. On the flight the seats were comfortable even on economy, everything was smooth and the meal was good.

The inflight service was on par with SQ - their attentive was on another level which you probably can only get on SQ if you're on PE & higher. For instance, we dozed off on the flight to Bali and skipped the meal service, I woke up in the middle for the washroom and the cabin crew waited for me outside to the washroom to catch me if I need food or anything. And when I returned back to my seat, I realised there was a sticker placed to call them if we need any food.

The only feedback was they started the descending process an hour before the landing time, most airlines does that 30-40 minutes before. And English was limited, so be prepared to ask / answer questions in Mandarin.

Day 7

Evening — Layover in Guangzhou

We landed in Guangzhou around 7pm, and our next flight was at 2am - we had a good 7 hours to explore this city. Unfortunately we spent an hour at the immigration so we knew it will be just a quick trip to and fro.

Beijing Road 北京路步行街

Stopped somewhere near Beijing Road, according to our didi driver, it was one of the popular night places in Guangzhou. It was drizzling and we left all our rain gear in our checked in luggage, so we ended up walking in the rain.

茉莉奶白 (北京路天河城店)

Drinking my favourite China bubble tea brand, and my must order - 一朵茉莉花 Snowy Jasmine! Jasmine green floral tea with cream and pecan crunch.

YEMEI 野妹火锅 (北京路店)

It works like a supermarket where all the hotpot ingredients were packed in boxes or trays with the weight / price indicated. We grabbed a basket and filled it up quickly with stuffs that we liked. It wasn't a super wow hotpot meal, but decent enough to satisfy our hotpot craving. The staff were very cold towards us, so we tried our best not to ask too much questions.

大佛古寺

It was still raining but we wanted to make a visit to this famous Buddhist temple. I think it looks really good in the evening with the lights display, the building was glittering in dark gold, enhancing the solemn atmosphere.

We walked towards the river, unfortunately it was really late at night (11pm+) that there wasn't much city lights view. Hence we decided not to further explore, otherwise would like to Haizhu Square 海珠广场 for sightseeing. We ended up stopping by a 711 to do some small shopping of snacks to bring home. And being in a 711 made us feel safe to book a didi compared to hopping on it at a random street / building.

The immigrant for departure was a breeze that didn't take long. And we were surprised that there were still shops opened at midnight selling more snacks and gifts which we ended up doing another round of shopping to keep ourselves awake to board the 2am flight.

PS: We didn't have any CNY with us, it was a cashless trip, and everything was done possible with our wechatpay and alipay!
